As an independent artist, you’ve probably been told over and over again that you should be posting social media content every day- maybe even multiple times a day. But filming lip-sync videos in your car gets old fast. You want to stay active and connect with your audience, but how do you keep up with creating new content every day? The short answer: you don’t! Batch-creating social media content is a much more sustainable way to create quality content and stay consistent while leaving you free to invest more time and energy into your music.

One of the best opportunities for batch-creating content is in the studio! A single recording session is a goldmine for capturing behind-the-scenes footage that can turn into months of promo material. Here’s some tips on how to get even more value from your next recording session.

Just Press Play

Come prepared with plenty of storage space on your phone (or whatever device you’re planning to record on). Before you start your recording session, set up your device to capture a wide shot of the studio, press record, and just let it run. This is an easy way to capture B-roll footage that can be cut up and used in multiple videos. This is also a great way to organically capture those magical moments that can happen when you’re creating a song (which is way better than trying to re-create the moment for social media later)! BTS footage is a perfect way to give your audience more insight into your process and help them connect more with you and your music.

The Studio Shot List (You Can Steal This!)

In addition to letting the camera run, you can also get plenty of intentional shots in.

  • Reacting to a sick beat drop, nailing a vocal run, or your first time hearing the final mix

  • Over the shoulder shots of the DAW or mixing board

  • Panning shots of the studio, setup, gear

  • A shot(s) of you lip syncing (or live singing) the hook into the studio mic with good lighting

  • Don’t forget photos- selfie with your producer, photos of the process, photos in the vocal booth, etc.

Putting it All Together

Once you’ve finished your day in the studio, you’ve now not only created a great song, but also have hours worth of footage to turn into content to promote the song! The footage you shot can now be sliced up to easily create 15+ pieces of content for TikTok, Reels, or YouTube Shorts. Take some B-roll footage and put your final track over it for a polished feel. Single out a significant moment that stands out from the session. Or, use some of the more intentional shots you took with a catchy hook. Here’s a few ideas:

  • Hook: “Come with me to record my new song”; Compilation footage of various moments throughout your recording session

  • Hook: “POV: You just wrote the song of the summer”; Footage of you talking with the producer, in the vocal booth, etc.

  • Hook: “What 20 vocal layers actually looks like”; Shot of the DAW with the raw vocal layers, shots of you in the vocal booth, compare to the final mix

  • Hook: “How I deal with heartbreak”; Shot of you in the booth or lip syncing your song in the studio

Use your creativity to come up with even more content that fits your style and personality and that you think will resonate with your audience. The possibilities are endless! Utilizing your studio time for content creation can easily help lighten the burden of social media content creation for an independent artist.
