You’re an early adopter of StudioBook. For that, we sincerely thank you. We are really excited about what we're building and none of it would even be possible without you.

This newsletter is to give you an idea of how our founders use their own product (StudioBook) to simplify their studio booking process. Here’s co-owner of 303 Recording, StudioBook’s CEO and co-founder, James McKenney.

Inception of StudioBook

Hey, I’m James. Before I founded StudioBook, I was making music. It’s a side hustle and hobby I’m leaning more into now, especially since opening 303 Recording a couple of years ago.

I knew the main pain points of studio booking. Unclear booking flow per studio, disagreements on price, being ghosted. So I gathered a team and pitched an idea of something we could build to make booking easier for both studios and artists.

So StudioBook was born. As we started seeing traction on the platform, my co-founder Brendan Baar and I decided to open a recording studio and really test it out for ourselves. Not only did we realize a dream of owning a recording studio, we started seeing how we can really shape the industry. If every studio used StudioBook, the recording industry would be forever changed.

Better Workflow, Better Money

Aside from users we’ve heard from, Brendan and I have used StudioBook to make 303 Recording’s booking flow smoother.

As a musician and now as a studio owner, I've seen pain points on both sides of the coin. Flaky artists, missed deposits, waiting for money, haggling over price. Talking via email, call, text, and social media for bookings. The list goes on.

StudioBook has eliminated most of these pain points for me and my studio. Here's how:

1.) Straightforward, online booking flow - It’s not convenient for artists to fill out a form on your website. It’s also annoying for them to call and get your voicemail because you're in a session or too busy to answer the phone. StudioBook's booking feature cuts this out entirely, and you always have the ability to deny bookings for any reason.

2.) No money issues - Once you accept a booking, your money is transferred. Don’t worry if the artist will show up or if they'll actually have money for a deposit. Full payments come through after each booked recording session is scheduled to end.

3.) Streamlined communication - Studios are often one-man shows or have lean teams. It's not a good use of their time to manage bookings by fielding emails, calls, and texts. We use StudioBook’s Private Messaging system to manage all our client communication.

4.) Low Cost - There's only a 5% booking fee on StudioBook, compared to bigger platforms like PeerSpace who take 15-20%.

So, how did we actually integrate with StudioBook and start seeing these benefits?

We listed 303 Recording on StudioBook and put a button on our website that takes customers right to the studio booking page. Clients click and book a time that works for them without ever having to speak with us.

If you don’t have a website, you can add your StudioBook page to Link Tree or whatever link-based site you share on social media. (If you want an example of our online booking flow, check out our website at 303recording.com.)

Recording studios are a nuanced business, so StudioBook is not for everyone. But for us, having it as part of our online booking flow has 100% helped us gain and retain new customers.

We’re making music more often and with more experienced artists that find us on StudioBook. It’s changing how we do business. We’re optimistic the change will spread.
