Hey! Nick Warner from StudioBook here. This week we have a special guest on the newsletter. It comes from a mentor and producer business coach of mine, Daniel Grimmett. He is the CEO of Dark Label. I went through his program and it was an absolute game changer for me. He is one of the smartest people I know.

If you want to “make it” as a producer, listen to him. If you reach out to him or his team, let him know you found him through Nick from StudioBook. It will be an easy way to stand out in his inbox and a nice way of saying thank you to me!

Here’s “The Studio Model That’s Scaling Fast for Producers,” by Daniel Grimmett.

This is currently my favorite business model for producers who run home studios:

Threads/Outreach → Hourly Session/Studio Tour → Project Rate → Retainer + Royalties

The result? $6K (average) to $16K (good month).

And if your studio isn’t in a great market, just supplement it with remote clients (still for full production work).

We’ve also found that when you lead with yourself as a producer first (and the studio second), it’s easier to increase your rate per song.

I assume that’s because if there’s a bigger or better-equipped studio in town that doesn’t charge much, you’re kind of “capped”--but that’s less of an issue when they’re hiring the producer rather than the studio itself.

If you want more details and to see this in action then watch this video.

Thank you again Daniel Grimmett, CEO of Dark Label, for allowing StudioBook to share your content in our newsletter. I (Nick) couldn’t thank him enough for helping my music career. If you’re a music producer looking to turn it into a sustainable career, he is your guy. Remember to mention you heard about him from StudioBook and/or Nick if you reach out to him!
