One of the most common questions beginners have when it comes to making music is “How do I get it on streaming platforms?” The simple answer is; use a music distributor.

The term “distribution” was a little easier to understand in previous years where record labels and distributors were actually shipping physical copies of their albums to stores for customers to buy. Now that we’re in the digital age, the process is the same, it just translates a little differently.

Distribution to Digital Service Providers

Music distributors in today’s age deliver your music to what are called DSPs or Digital Service Providers. In principle, all distributors do the same thing by allowing consumers to stream your music. Although each distributor can get your music on these platforms, not all distributors will do more than just that.

When it comes to addressing which one is best for you, here are some of the more important things to consider:

  1. The price of the distributor/terms of the deal

  2. The opportunities associated with it

  3. How easy the website/platform is for you to navigate

  4. How good the support is when issues arise

Each distributor offers different prices points for their services. Some are monthly subscriptions, some are annual subscriptions, some are free but take a commission as compensation. Most distributors like DistroKid, TuneCore, and United Masters still allow you to own 100% of your own masters which is very important for independent artists.

About Different Distributors

Distributors like United Masters allow you to pitch your music for sync opportunities and other cool things instead of just putting it on streaming services.

Certain platforms are buggy and have tech issues when it comes to accepting splits, correcting mistakes with song titles, cover art, etc.

When these do happen, it’s frustrating to resolve without good tech support. Testing out different distribution platforms is a healthy approach. If an issue arises with a track, see how the support is and if it’s difficult to manage, test out a different platform until you find a good fit for your needs.

Note: This article doesn’t cover artists who are being offered distribution deals or other distribution partnerships outside of monthly subscriptions.
